Do German Shorthaired Pointers Need to Hunt? Let’s Clear That Up.
There’s a common belief that if you bring home a German Shorthaired Pointer, you’re also signing up for a life in the field—shotgun, birds, and all. And while these dogs absolutely shine in that environment, here’s the truth:
GSPs don’t need to hunt—but they do need purpose.
Originally bred as versatile hunting companions, the German Shorthaired Pointer was designed to work closely with its handler—covering ground, solving problems, and staying connected every step of the way. That wiring doesn’t disappear just because a dog lives in a suburban home or spends weekends on hiking trails instead of instead of flushing, pointing, and retrieving.
Built for More Than One Path
At their core, GSPs are athletes, thinkers, and loyal companions. Hunting is just one of many outlets for those traits. Today’s GSP might channel that same drive into:
Trail running or hiking
Dock diving or Fast CAT
Scent work or tracking games
Off-leash adventures with their people
Structured play and enrichment at home
The common thread? Movement, engagement, and connection.

The Real Need: Partnership
What GSPs truly crave isn’t a specific activity—it’s a job alongside their person. They want to do life with you. Whether that’s navigating a backcountry trail, joining you on a long morning walk, or learning new skills in the backyard, they thrive when they’re included and challenged.
Without that outlet, they’ll find their own “job”…and it might not be one you love. (Think: counter surfing, yard redesign, or inventing new ways to test your patience.)
Adventure Over Expectation
You don’t need to be a hunter to be an incredible GSP owner. But you do need to embrace an active, engaged lifestyle. These dogs are built for momentum—physically and mentally—and when you meet them there, they become the kind of companions people can’t stop talking about.
At The Tipsy Rabbit, we say our dogs are:
Built for the field. Raised for the family.
And for many families, “the field” looks like hiking trails, lakeside weekends, road trips, and everyday adventures right outside their front door.
A GSP doesn’t need birds to be fulfilled.
They need you, space to run big, a job to do and a life that lets them lean into who they were built to be.
Give them that—and they’ll give you everything right back.
Cheers to Happy tails,
❤️ Becky
