These accomplishments certainly have value, representing countless hours of training, dedication, and teamwork between dog and handler.But at Tipsy Rabbit, we believe the definition of a truly proven dog is much bigger than a title alone.A Title Tells One Part of the Story Titles measure a dog's performance within a specific venue under a specific set of rules.A conformation championship evaluates how closely a dog matches the written breed standard.A hunt test evaluates whether a dog demonstrates the skills required at that particular testing level.A field trial rewards dogs competing against one another under competitive conditions.Each of these tells us something important.But none of them tells us everything.A title doesn't automatically tell us how a dog lives with children, how quickly it learns, how stable its temperament is in public, whether it possesses an "off switch" at home, or how it consistently performs throughout an entire hunting season.Those qualities matter just as much—especially for the families who will spend the next decade or more sharing their lives with one of our puppies.Real-World Performance Matters Long before organized hunt tests and modern competitions became widespread, German Shorthaired Pointers earned their reputations one hunt at a time.The kennels that helped shape this breed weren't breeding for ribbons.They were breeding dogs that hunters wanted beside them every weekend—dogs that could find birds, point naturally, retrieve willingly, work all day, recover quickly, and then settle quietly with the family that evening.If a dog couldn't consistently perform in the field, hunters knew.No title could hide that.Its reputation spread through experience.Many of the influential kennels behind our own dogs were built this way. In fact, black German Shorthaired Pointers have been part of the breed's European heritage for well over a century.Where Did the Black Color Come From?During the late 1800s and early 1900s, German breeders were carefully developing what would become today's German Shorthaired Pointer—a truly versatile hunting companion capable of pointing, tracking, retrieving on land and water, and serving as a devoted family companion.As part of that effort, breeders introduced the black Arkwright Pointer into select breeding programs. Their goal wasn't simply to create a new coat color. They sought to strengthen pigmentation while preserving and refining the athleticism, instinct, intelligence, and versatility that define the breed today.Within only a few generations, these dogs were fully accepted as German Shorthaired Pointers. That’s what makes all the difference between a well-mannered companion and a full-grown dog who still thinks your forearm is fair game.What Is Mouthing (and Why GSPs Do It So Much)? Mouthing is when a puppy uses their mouth to interact with the world—nibbling, grabbing, or play-biting without intent to harm.For GSPs, this behavior is turned up to level 100.Why?Because they were bred for it. Have a toy or chew within reach and:Strategically place it into their mouth the moment they go to mouth you. Redirect calmly and confidently. Reinforce the right choice with praise, petting, or appropriate play. You’re teaching: 👉 “This is what you’re allowed to bite.”Over time, your puppy will start to seek out appropriate outlets on their own—because that’s what’s been consistently reinforced.Let Them Chew (The Right Way) Here’s the truth: You’re not going to stop a GSP from using their mouth…so don’t try. Mouthing thrives in chaos &amp; fades with structure.</li></ul>Incorporate:<ul><li>Short, structured walks</li><li>Basic obedience (sit, place, kennel, here)</li><li>Clicker training</li><li>Calm routines inside the home</li></ul>Running burns energy. Structure burns the brain. You need both!&nbsp; Enforce rest (Yes, Really)!
